Signs and Float Lines to Protect Loons

Signs like these can provide a measure of protection to loons at risk of disturbance by boaters or other lake users.

In addition to building and placing rafts, LPC staff and volunteers manage water traffic around loon nests and in nursery areas to protect breeding loons. A well-hidden loon nest is often quite safe from detection and disturbance by boaters and other lake users. In cases where nests are threatened because of their visibility or proximity to shoreline developments or water traffic, LPC staff and volunteers place signs and float lines at a distance from nests to help give loons the space they need to incubate eggs.
