The
Loon Center and Markus Wildlife Sanctuary
LPC's headquarters, The Loon Center in Moultonborough, NH, is the focal point
of our educational activities. The Loon Center has allowed LPC to expand its
outreach efforts through increased public awareness of the Common Loon and
its challenges. Open 6 days a week year-round and 7 days a week from July
1st to Columbus Day, our displays, exhibits, award-winning videos and interpretive
talks introduce visitors to the wonders of New Hampshire's environment and
wildlife. The Center hosts over 8,000 New Hampshire residents and visitors
each year. Admission is free, so why not come visit!

The
Frederick and Paula Anna Markus Wildlife Sanctuary
Perhaps The Loon Center's
greatest asset is its location on the Markus Wildlife Sanctuary. The Sanctuary
is comprised of 200 acres of upland forests, marshes, ponds, clear-running
streams and over 5,000 feet of pristine shoreline on Lake Winnipesaukee, one
of the largest remaining areas of natural shoreline on the lake. These diverse
habitats make this sanctuary home to a wide host of plant and animal species.
The public are invited to explore either of the two trails that wind their
way through the Sanctuary and to share their new discoveries with us as well!

The
Forest Walk
A short, easy loop
through mixed woods. Enjoy edge and interior forest habitats, the warblers
and wildflowers of spring, the cool shade in summer, fall's colors and woodland
tracks on winter's snows.

The
Loon Nest Trail
Experience the natural
beauty of upland forests, marshes, clear streams and close to a mile of pristine
shoreline. Follow Halfway Brook through mixed woodlands toward the lakeshore.
Squeeze between giant granite "glacial erratic" boulders, sit and
enjoy Lake Winnipesaukee from several vantage points and skirt the edge of
a thriving marsh before returning to The Loon Center. Or, walk to the views
and back for a shorter trip. Sturdy footwear is recommended for those who
want to walk the entire trail. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound on both
trails - you may even catch a glimpse of our resident pair of loons!
Opportunities to volunteer
abound at the Loon Center throughout the year. From helping in the gift shop
to working on maintaining the trail system, people interested in volunteering
their time and skills are gladly welcomed and greatly needed. For more information
on volunteering at the Loon Center, contact Harry Vogel, Director of The Loon
Center at (603) 476-5666.
